NTRODUCTION The Internet has become a fully integrated part of our society, touching many aspects of our business and personal lives. The Internet is so incredibly popular because it enables us to not only quickly access information from sources all over the world, but also transfer information quickly and easily. Businesses were quick in seeing the benefits the Internet would provide their companies. Soon after phrases like â€Å"The Web† and â€Å"Web Surfing† began to circulate, computers with Internet capabilities became as commonplace as pencils and post-it-notes on employees’ desks. The positive affects the Internet merit, also leave room for the Internet’s negative affects as well. WHAT DOES THE PROBLEM LOOK LIKE? The Internet abuse problem takes on many shapes and forms. Fortune2 magazine explains that employees misuse time by exploiting company high speed Internet access for chatting online and downloading MP3 files. Unfortunately this problem goes beyond just misused time. According to Fortune3 magazine, employees put their companies at risk by viewing sexually explicit material while on the job. This risk manifests itself in the form of lawsuits and sexual harassment claims brought on by offended co-workers and is the reason many employees can get fired for this behavior. The issue of defining Internet abuse for procedures manuals and ethics policies has also become an important topic. As companies become better able to define this problem more they will have more power to deal with it as we will discuss later. WHAT CAUSES INTERNET ABUSE The causes of Internet abuse are as numerous as the ways the Internet can be misused.
