Dr.Jack Kevorkian
ââ¬Å"Dr. Deathâ⬠Dr. Jack Kevorkian Dr. Jack Kevorkian was known as ââ¬Å"Dr. Deathâ⬠since at least 1956, when he conducted a study photographing patients' eyes as they died. Results established that blood vessels in the cornea contract and become invisible as the heart stops beating. And he made a lot of other ways to make people like handicapped or anyone who suffer from anything in his life to kill himself, he claims to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end, and he famously said that ââ¬Å"dying is not a crimeâ⬠. People and the government disagreed with Dr. Kevorkianââ¬â¢s behavior for many several reasons. First his not a god to control the death of people to make them not feel pain and not to face their diseases and destroy them , he is like telling people that life is not worth living for and problems are not going to be solved except with death. In September of 1998 he videotaped the death of Thomas Youk; the tape was broadcast by CBS television'sà 60 Minutesà in November, what a cruel thing to videotape? The death of man and broadcast it on live T. V. This man made a hundreds of families miserable with his invention ââ¬Å"Mercitronâ⬠(mercy machine). If he is deciding for people weather to live or die by acting if u donââ¬â¢t feel pain then live, if u experience death it will be much helpful and comfortable. Then what is the importance of god, I thought he was the one who knows who will die and when, and can make all of the people of earth die in one second and live in one second. There are only a few cases where someone is allowed to take a life and even these cases are not agreed upon. These cases could be in self defense or if someone is badly injured or sick and there is no medical care that could help him and living on even for a minute will cause suffering beyond imagination. But there has never been a case where some loco doctor wants to experiment death on other and people agreed with him. This must mean that this is one sick person and no one agrees with him because it is not human. Thank god of course that the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans who want to kill themselves but are physically unable to have no constitutional right to end their lives. Kevorkian was sentenced to 10-25 years in prison, but was paroled in 2007, in failing health and nearing his own death by the order of god not by a machine.

Love and conflict in Romeo and Juliet Essay
Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet shows how love between the Capulet Romeo and Montague Juliet resolves an ââ¬Å"ancientâ⬠conflict between the two families. The play was first performed in 1595, the play was Shakespeareââ¬â¢s first tragedy genre. Shakespeare believes the two lovers are bound by fate, ââ¬Å"star-crossedâ⬠. We know that the hatred shown between both families is an ââ¬Å"ancient grudgeâ⬠, and that the rivalry is passed down the family tree. The prologue summarises the whole play in advance, this gives an overview of Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s actions. Shakespeare uses different styles of speech to represent social classes in the play. The upper class speak in a more knowledgeable blank verse, while the lower classes speak in prose. A clear example of this is the way the servants at the beginning insult each while speaking in prose, however as soon as soon as more aristocratic people come in, they speak in blank verse. From the start of the play we see the servants of both houses show their dislike to each other. This is one of the major conflicts in the play. Sampson and Gregory are servants of the house of Capulet. The fact that the family rivalry and hatred is present in the low status of a servant, shows how ââ¬Å"The quarrel is between our masters and us their men. â⬠The two Capulet servants show they are low in power as they speak in prose. They use puns as insults, ââ¬Å"I mean, an weââ¬â¢ll be in choler weââ¬â¢ll drawâ⬠, as ââ¬Å"cholerâ⬠also means ââ¬Å"angerâ⬠. They argue about their hatred for their enemy, insulting and mocking them in the process. They use sexual innuendo; Sampson says how he will rape the women of Montague, after he has dealt with the men, he will â⬠be cruel to the maids- I will cut off their heads. â⬠Gregory replies ââ¬Å"The heads of the maids? â⬠Sampson then answers his question with ââ¬Å"Ay, the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads. â⬠ââ¬Å"maidenheadsâ⬠meaning virginity. The servants try to denote the Montague servants by referring to them as animals, â⬠A dog of the house of Montague moves me. â⬠Shakespeare inserts dramatic action to the play; he applies it to the fight between the servants that is bound to occur. He achieves this by causing excitement over the argument of the servants, and the intimidation shown to start a fight. The Capulet servants show they have pride and look down on Montague men, but they do not want to start a fight and get the blame for it, ââ¬Å"I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list. â⬠The Capulet servants provoke the other house into fighting, by saying that they are leering them towards a fight, and if they reject they are cowards, ââ¬Å"I will bite my thumb at them, which is a disgrace to bear it. â⬠Shakespeare intensifies the dramatic action by showing verbal duelling between the two houses. Montague ââ¬Å"Do you bite your thumb at us sir? â⬠Capulet ââ¬Å"I do bite my thumb sirâ⬠Montague ââ¬Å"Do you bite your thumb at us sir? â⬠Capulet ââ¬Å"No sir, I do not bite my thumb at you sir, but I do bite my thumb sir. â⬠This verbal duelling creates suspense to the physical fight, by both houses verbally fighting. Following the servantsââ¬â¢ conflict, another conflict occurs between Benvolio and Montague Tybalt. The peacemaker Benvolio comes to the scene to try and resolve the conflict in a non-violent method, while ââ¬Å"the fieryâ⬠Tybalt comes only to stir more trouble and fight. Benvolio is seen as a negotiator, he tries to talk to Tybalt to make him stop the fight, ââ¬Å"I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword or manage it to part these men with me. â⬠Benvolio appears mature and sensible, we get the impression that he wishes to avoid any means of conflict and see the household grudge resolved. The ââ¬Å"fieryâ⬠Tybalt on the other hand is violent and resents the house of Capulet with intensity. Unlike Benvolio he puts violence over peace, as he compares his hatred to that of hell, ââ¬Å"What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues and thee. â⬠Because of his desire for violence, we see Tybalt as less mature and intelligent as Benvolio. The conflict between Benvolio and Tybalt sees uses of imagery and blank verse language; this shows their high status. Benvolio speaks calmly and peacefully, while he is commanding in his speech. His desperation to try and resolve could be because he likes to be in control, or he feels it is the right thing to do, or he is in fear of his life. His desperation is shown by his imperative tone. ââ¬Å"I do but keep peace. â⬠There is an opposite antithesis as Benvolio is calm in his speech, while Tybalt is argumentative and shows his inner ferocity and anger. ââ¬Å"Have at thee coward! â⬠Both men use their imagery based on fire. Benvolio describes Tybalt as ââ¬Å"fieryâ⬠. Tybalt uses his infernal imagery as he shows his Montague hatred, equal to his hatred of hell, hell being a fiery place of evil. ââ¬Å"As I hate hell, all Montagues. â⬠Shakespeare again creates dramatic action in the conflict between Benvolio and Tybalt. The opposite interests of both men create this effect, as one is desperate to fight, while the other is desperate to stop the fight. Benvolio is demanding and desperate to keep peace, ââ¬Å"I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, or manage it to part these men with me. â⬠Dramatic action for Benvolio is created by his goal to resolve the conflict and search for peace. Tybalt wants to fight with his enemy and has no interest in peace, his violent conscious creates his dramatic action. I will now look into the triple way conflict between the Prince and the two houses. The Prince shows signs of resent to both houses, as they do not keep peace; he calls them ââ¬Å"rebellious subjects,â⬠and ââ¬Å"enemies to peaceâ⬠. The Prince, like Benvolio wants peace over brawling, he dislikes the way peace has been broken in Verona, where it is his job in his high state of Authority to keep peace and deal with disruptions against laws of Verona. ââ¬Å"Three civil brawls bred of an airy word. By thee, old Capulet, and Montague. Have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets. â⬠As the Prince is the highest in authority, he rightly feels he should be respected by the houses, and the fact that they have again broke his laws and not listened to his warnings makes him believe they do not respect him as they should. This leads to the Prince becoming angry, and causes him to make a final deadly warning, that if any further violent outbreaks occur, lives shall be taken. ââ¬Å"If you ever disturb our streets again, your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace. â⬠As a further punishment, the Prince tells the citizens to be angered of the wrong doing which has taken place, this leads to extra guilt on the houses, ââ¬Å"And made Veronaââ¬â¢s ancient citizens Cast by their grave beseeming ornaments. â⬠Looking back at where the families went wrong, they did not show signs of keeping peace, possibly because if a family gives in and backs away from the other, they will look the weaker and more cowardly family, and with the strong pride that is present in both households, it is not a desired option. Capulet ââ¬Å"What is this? Give me my long sword! â⬠Montague ââ¬Å"Thou villain Capulet! Hold me not! Let me go! â⬠The Lords of both family have the same desire to fight as the servants, however this is not the way high class Lords should be acting. The Prince wants to be in control, and proves this by speaking in a commanding and powerful manner. He threatens lives of people that go against his orders, as he requires high amounts of respect because he is so high in authority. The Prince uses rhetorical language to display his anger at the families disobeying his laws and orders, ââ¬Å"Will they not hear? â⬠The Prince uses imagery of fiery blood, to show the housesââ¬â¢ violent rage, ââ¬Å"That quench the fire of your pernicious rage, with purple fountains issuing from your veins. â⬠The families speak angrily as they want to fight, ââ¬Å"Give me my long sword! â⬠Lady Capulet adds comedy to the play as she mocks her husbandââ¬â¢s old age, ââ¬Å"A crutch, a crutch! â⬠Lady Montague shows her control over her husband, as she orders him not to get involved in the fight, ââ¬Å"Thou shall not stir one foot to seek a foe. â⬠Both families speak in blank verse to show their high status. The lordsââ¬â¢ violent conscious adds dramatic action to the scene, as they immediately want to fight each other, ââ¬Å"My sword I say! Old Montague is come! â⬠Lady Montague adds comedy; this decreases the build up of tension, ââ¬Å"A crutch, a crutch! â⬠Romeo has an internal conflict, as he loves Juliet, but he feels he should hate her, as she is Capulet. The conflict is between his love for her and the traditional rivalry of the houses. ââ¬Å"O dear account, my life is in my foes debt. â⬠Romeo wants to still be loyal to his house, but he wants to love Juliet. He feels guilt when he marries her because he keeps it secret against his family and friends. ââ¬Å"I pray, that thou consent to marry us today! â⬠Romeo is also in fear as he is going against his family and house, ââ¬Å"Ay, so I fear the more is my unrest. â⬠Romeoââ¬â¢s love is so strong, he finally comes to the conclusion that he is ready to give up his name, so he can love Juliet without the guilt of being a Montague, ââ¬Å"Call me but ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ and Iââ¬â¢ll be new baptised. Henceforth I never will be Romeo. â⬠This is a big step for Romeo, he is ready to give up his pride and dignity of being a Montague. Romeo speaks in blank verse; this shows he is of a high social status. Romeo is desperate and eccentric in his speech as he is so infatuated with Juliet; he proves this by immediately wanting to kiss Juliet. ââ¬Å"My lips, two blushing pilgrims ready to stand. To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. â⬠He compares Juliet with the shining dominant beauty of the sun, ââ¬Å"what light yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. â⬠He speaks rhetorically about his love, ââ¬Å"Did my heart love till now? â⬠When Romeo first lays eyes on Juliet, he speaks in praise of her as if she is an angel, and is too beautiful for this earth, ââ¬Å"Beauty too rich for use, for Earth too dear. â⬠Romeo then goes on to kiss Juliet, and then comes out with a rather fast decision that he is in love. Dramatic action is then created when his perfect love is spoilt when he discovers she is a Capulet, ââ¬Å"Is she a Capulet? O dear account, my life is in my foes debt. â⬠Dramatic action is then intensified when he decides he will give up his name for Juliet, ââ¬Å"Call me but ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ and Iââ¬â¢ll be new baptised. Henceforth I never will be Romeo. â⬠Romeo firstly is in sexually attraction to fellow Montague Roseline, his love is unrequited. ââ¬Å"out of her favour where I am in love. â⬠Romeo is depressed and in despair for he is ââ¬Å"out of her favourâ⬠as his love is not being returned. The love is one way. Romeo is so mixed up with his love he is lost in thought, this causes Romeo to lose track of time, as he believes the day is dragging on, ââ¬Å"Ay me sad hours seem long. â⬠Romeo wrongly thinks he is in true love, however his attraction to her is only based on her beauty, ââ¬Å"Love is a smoke made with the fume of sights. â⬠This is courtly love. When Romeo speaks about his false love for Roseline, he shows his state of depression and despair, ââ¬Å"Not having that, that makes them short. â⬠Romeo uses imagery of Cupid to say that Roseline will not fall for his love. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢ll not be hit with Cupidââ¬â¢s arrow. â⬠He says she has ââ¬Å"Dianeââ¬â¢s whitâ⬠as Roseline will not show love back for his unrequited love, and she will not love anyone. Romeo uses oxymoron in his words to show his despair and confusion in his love. ââ¬Å"O heavy lightness. Serious Vanity. â⬠Shakespeare again creates dramatic action in Romeoââ¬â¢s love for Roseline, Romeoââ¬â¢s point of desperation and depression causes this. Romeo is in an illusion by thinking he is in true love while it is truly courtly love, this shows his inexperience in love, this also creates slight humour. ââ¬Å"Why such is loveââ¬â¢s transgression. Grieves heavy on my breast. â⬠Romeo passes on his depression in his conversation with Benvolio. Romeo ââ¬Å"Dost thou laugh? â⬠Benvolio ââ¬Å"No coz, I rather weep. â⬠Romeo ââ¬Å"Good heart, at what? â⬠Benvolio ââ¬Å"At thy good heartââ¬â¢s oppression. â⬠The main love in the play is that of Romeo and Juliet. They fall in love at first sight, as theyââ¬â¢re both attracted to each otherââ¬â¢s beauty. Romeo shows Julietââ¬â¢s beauty by saying she outshines the brightest torches in the room, ââ¬Å"O she doth teach the torches to burn bright. â⬠Again we see Romeo falling easily to sexual attraction, as he did with Roseline. ââ¬Å"And touching her makes my hand rude. â⬠He considers Juliet a holy object and therefore untouchable. Unlike Roseline, Juliet answers back to Romeoââ¬â¢s love, ââ¬Å"My only love sprung from my only hate. â⬠Romeo uses imagery to compare Juliet to the beauty of angels, ââ¬Å"Beauty too rich for use, for Earth too dear. â⬠He again refers to Juliet as holy, as he says his lips are pilgrims that have travelled to her to kiss her holiness, ââ¬Å"My lips, two blushing pilgrims ready to stand. â⬠Romeo uses hyperbole terms to express Julietââ¬â¢s beauty, ââ¬Å"O she doth teach the torches to burn bright. â⬠Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s language is both really for the moment, as they wish for the moment never to end. They are both very lustful, as they both have the same desire to kiss each other. Romeo ââ¬Å"My lips two blushing pilgrims ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. â⬠Juliet ââ¬Å"Then have my lips the sin that they have took. â⬠Both lovers speak in blank verse showing their high role in their houses. Dramatic action is created in the way that both Romeo and Juliet both fall in love at first sight. A big shock for both is when find out they are from rival families. Romeo says, ââ¬Å"My life is in my foes debt. â⬠Juliet shows the same reaction, ââ¬Å"My only love sprung from my only hate. â⬠Romeoââ¬â¢s praise of Juliet helps strengthen dramatic action. I believe Shakespeare wrote the play to show the power of love. He shows the dangers and advantages in the play. Because there love was so strong, Romeo and Juliet died and many people were killed. The advantages t this love is obvious, the way their tragic death and love resolves a great conflict between the two houses.

Over consumption has different effects on earth Essay
Over consumption has different effects on earth - Essay Example Another effect of overconsumption on earth is displacement and migration of living things from their normal places of living. Overconsumption leads to climate changes that make it necessary for living things to move from these places in search of more comfortable places. Human beings are the most affected with poor populations and those with low incomes being the most exposed. Consequently, the rate of economic development among these people is greatly reduced (Cohen-Kiener 2009, p122). Overconsumption has negative effects on factory workers as they try to meet the high demand for goods. Manufacturing companies have to meet the required quality and quantity of goods they produce otherwise they will be outcompeted by their rivals. This pressure is passed on to workers who are forced to work for long hours and in some situations under dangerous environments. Accidents in factories have also increased due to increased complexities in production processes thus posing another risk to factory workers. This has led to increased friction between employers and employees as employees seek safer working environments (Cohen-Kiener 2009,

Case analysis-Boeing Vs Airbus case, international business strategy Essay
Case analysis-Boeing Vs Airbus case, international business strategy - Essay Example It was claimed by Airbus that, ââ¬Å"both the Boeing and the McDonnell Douglas have been benefited for years from the hidden U.S. government subsidiesâ⬠. This merger was a horizontal merger between the Boeing and the McDonnell Douglas. By the term horizontal merger it can be understood that the merger is occurring between the companies that produces similar goods and services. This kind of merger basically takes place when larger companies attempt to create more efficient economies of scale (Investopedia, 2010). It is evident from the case study that the performance of the McDonnell Douglas had been very poor which would have forced it to exit from the commercial aircraft business. According to the analyst ââ¬Å"the merger with the Boeing merely accelerated the process. Because the merger would reduce the number of players in the commercial aerospace industry from three to two, it was expected that the antitrust authorities would review the mergerâ⬠. Both the Airbus and the Boeing have received under the terms of joint agreement, various government aids in order to develop the large aircraft like Airbus A380 and Boeing 787. The US had made a complaint against the loans that was granted to Airbus since Boeing had not received any such kinds of aids. According to the experts of the aviation industry, by this kind of complaint the US were actually trying to prevent the EU from granting any further launch aids to the Airbus for the development of the A350. This would also help the US manufacturer Boeing to strengthen their position in the United States. In response to the complaint made by the United States aircraft makers like the Boeing against the Airbus, the EU also filed a case against the US for unlawful subsidization of the Boeing. Therefore, this seems to be the major problem as analyzed from the case study which needs proper attention (Haak & Bruggemann, 2010). Another key

Mayan Project - Essay Example Hence, symbols could represent either a word or a single syllable. This was a highly elaborate set of glyphs written by scribes who were members of the priesthood. The language was usually written in two blocks arranged in columns, and was read from top to bottom, from left to right. It was rich with words and phonetic rules, and only elite members of the community knew how to write (Beatriz n.d). The Mayan numerals were based on a base-twenty (vigecimal) numeral system, which were made up of three symbols: zero was represented by a shell shape, one by a dot and give by a bar. Numbers above 19 were written as a combination of these written in a descending vertical line. Three cells were written, the uppermost one represented the number of 400s in the number, the middle one represented the number of 20s in it and the lower one represented the 1s in it. In case a number was larger than that, a new row would be started. The Mayans would also rarely use face number glyphs, but this use was very uncommon and mostly appeared in monumental carving. The Mayans used addition and subtraction when needed, and there is also evidence that they were familiar with and used the concepts of infinity and fractions for various needs ("The Maya Mathematical" n.d; "Mayan Numerals" 2009). A Mayan stela (also called stele) was a stone or wooden slab that was very tall and quite wide. It was used mainly for funeral or commemorative purposes, and consisted of the name and titles of the deceased or living person for whom it was erected. It also included of lavish paintings, carvings and inscriptions depicting and describing that person. More often then not, revered rulers or hieroglyphic texts were inscribed to immortalize a unique feat or achievement during a rulers reigning period or simply his character and greatness. It was also used to remember important dates and occasions, something which proved to be

Historical Impact on Working Conditions (HR, Employee Labor and Research Paper - 1
Historical Impact on Working Conditions (HR, Employee Labor and Relations) - Research Paper Example The momentum of ââ¬Ëcotton cultureââ¬â¢ took off with deployment of large number of Black slaves. In 1790, it is estimated that 700,000 slave workers lived around Ohio River and Mason-Dixon Line (Reef, 2007, pp. XVI-XIX). Throughout eighteenth century, factories grew rapidly where profit was the chief motive. Without any legislation to protect workers rights, the situation was quite messy for laborers who often had to work 14 hours a day. Laborers often protested, but could not match the power of employers. In 1835, a strike was organized in Philadelphia for 10 hours in a day work. By the end of civil war, factories were more organized in technical terms with better equipments and tools. Coming up of railroads carried the next level of growth momentum. Yet, labors had little say on their workings. After the civil war, the struggle gained momentum from labors, though in unorganized and uncoordinated fashion. With little or no government assistance, it was tough to move forward (Reef, 2007, p. XIX). Although the term ââ¬Ëcollective bargainingââ¬â¢ was initially used in 1891 by economist Sidney Webb, it was introduced in raw form ever since the inception of trade unions soon after the post civil war period. Collective bargaining is a method of arbitration between firm and the agents of a unit of employees intended at arriving at deals that sets operational conditions. Collective agreements normally specify wage amounts, shift hours, training, security, extra hours pay, and rights to take part in factory or corporation issues. Working conditions slowly improved side-by-side with the growth of trade unions. Many labor legislations were passed that set standard rules for hiring and remunerating labors. The first key event in the US labor history was establishment of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1886. AFL ran on the form of ââ¬Ëcraft unionsââ¬â¢ and was conservative in the sense that it did not challenge capitalism per se. Instead, it was

Classical culture - Essay Example Thus, this paper considers even further if Christian influence positively affected European history as it is expected or if it did more harm to the nation than good. Christianity speaks about love, justice and humanity. These are important considerations not only socially but also politically. Therefore, for people in the past and today, this is expected to have a good influence in individuals and in groups of people as well. Quite profoundly, Europeââ¬â¢s history shows the actualization of this Roman Catholic doctrine as the patriarch did his best in making warring nations come to friendly terms. At a time when the nations were at war, it has been a good thing that the Roman Catholic Church was there to advocate peace and brotherly love, an act which cooled down arguments and put some sense in the heads of hot-tempered leaders. The rise of Christian power also opened the way to the arguments about equality which nearly led to the abolishment of slavery in Medieval Europe. Such liberal thoughts consequently resulted to scholars and studies which has become the foundations of modern researches. This means that Christianity did not only affect the political realms of Europe but it also influenced its economic and educational advancements. Nevertheless, despite the positive changes Christianity brought along to the nation, it has affected it negatively as well. The world has become familiar about the information on European Christians who used their membership to the church to exploit non-Christians. There were several deaths that occurred in the name of Christianity, considering the victims as evils who were doomed with their religion and cultural backgrounds. Once again, they re-lived the lives of ancient Biblical accounts of wars and claimed that it is but right for them to kill non-Christians as popular characters in the Bible have done. This is also perhaps the reason why
Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo Essay Example for Free
Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo Essay Both novels, the Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and the El Filibusterismo, (The Filibuster) inspired by the patriotic ideals of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, depict the abuses suffered by the native indios at the hands of Spanish tyrants. The Noli paints us an ugly, yet clear picture of the so-called social cancer that deteriorates the society. The first of those two masterfully-crafted works, the Noli lays the most liberal, realistic and fearless view of the countrys well-being during the 300-year Spanish regime. It illustrates the rotten system of governance, the illicit ways of the church and the unfavorable trade of the privilege class. The Noli also relates how the government, the church and the privilege class manipulate the people. The government deprives the youth of education and how they use the peoples ignorance to their advantage. The treacherous friars by means of God and faith controlled the people, making them dummies of all sorts. On the other hand, the privilege class used their elite status to get ahead of everybody, by hook or by crook employing the me first attitude. In the Noli, the weak and disposed seemingly lose hope resulting to unfortunate deaths (as the case Pilisopo Tasyo) and sometimes insanity. (as the case of Sisa) Hence the oppressed formed a brotherhood that hopes to liberate the country by use of force. To no avail, due to disorganization and lack of arms, each and every attempt at resistance failed. In Noli, the character of Juan Crisostomo Ibarra was introduced, an intelligent and promising young man who has high hopes of changing the course of the country.

Introduction To Jungle Warfare History Essay
Introduction To Jungle Warfare History Essay Jungle warfare is a military term used to define combinations of special techniques that are aimed in areas that are or similar to jungle terrains. Categorically considered as one of the most dangerous forms of warfare, the training for jungle warfare is usually specialized and separated from the traditional military education because of the differences in the approaches and tactics used. Initially, the United States was not too keen on having jungle warfare training for the military troops as they viewed jungles, as impenetrable and unsuitable for military operations. However, because of the successful attack of the Japanese Army to the British forces in 1942 through the Malaysian Jungles, this line of thinking was slowly erased, and jungle training was placed as an important form of military warfare training. Nevertheless, in a jungle environment, the combat operations of the US Army have met limited success and continue to be challenged. As evident in the 1965 to 1975 Vietnam War, the US Army faced significant challenges and struggles to be victorious. Highlighting on the Vietnam War, this paper will attempt to identify the challenges faced by the US Army. The paper will also discuss the kind of training needed for jungle warfare to address these challenges. Background on Jungle Warfare Training One of the most famous and successful jungle warfare training grounds of the United States military troops was found in Fort Sherman in Panama. Called the Jungle Warfare Training Center (JWTC), it produced about 19,845 graduates from the year 1953 to its last year of operation in 1999. It was considered as the most grueling training grounds and as John Smit, one of the products of the JWTC in 1967 put it, this training was so crucial to the militarys ability to wage war in Vietnam and short of going into actual combat situation, it was the best training warfare facility that could be established (Abel, 1999). The origins of JWTC can be traced back to April 1951, when then Commanding General received Training Memorandum 9, which later on established the Jungle Warfare Training Board (JWTB). The primary mission of the JWTB was to research, analyze and report on findings and recommend changes and additions to the established United States Army doctrine and techniques of jungle warfare and equipment designed for operations (Hudnall, 2004, p.58). JWTB emphasized and kept alive the spirit of jungle warfare in the military. The essentiality of the trainings being done in Fort Sherman was highlighted during the Vietnam War, because it was during this time that the need and importance for jungle warfare training was parallel to that of the army troops survival and victory. The results of the participation of the United States in the Vietnam War could not be thoroughly discussed without going into the condition of the troops jungle warfare training. Therefore, with this point in mind, this paper will be dealing with the results of the combat operations of the US Army in the jungle environment during the 1965 to 1975 Vietnam War, on why it has met limited success and continues to be challenged, and on the significant challenges and struggles for victory. In addition, this paper will also discuss the kind and quality of jungle warfare training, which the soldiers received in preparation for the Vietnam War and its impact to the problems encountered. The Vietnam War and the Challenges of Jungle Warfare The jungle warfare training of the United States Army in Panama held a significant but insufficient experience to the trainees especially during the onset of the Vietnam War. Swatrzlander (2002) noted that one of the biggest mistake that contributed to the loss of the United States during the war was not the type and quality of training they had to undergo before being sent off for war, although it plays a certain factor, but it was more on the sending off of sheltered American boys to fight in the guerilla or jungle war, which is by definition is an extremely strategic and deadly kind of warfare, and as such cannot be fully taught at only limited periods of time. The three-week training grueling and extensive as it may be was simply insufficient as compared to the experience and training of their Vietnamese counterparts, with the latter holding quite an advantage in jungle wars as they were practically raised in this type of environment and at young ages they were already trained to be hateful and merciless killers. It must also be pointed out that not all American soldiers who were on duty for the Vietnam War were born, trained and even liked to be soldiers. In fact, a considerable number of them were only into this situation because of the draft being put into play by the US government. All males during this time were required to sign up for the draft once they turned 18 and if they were drawn from the list, they were forced to join the military, and quite possibly be sent to a conflict or war zone with duties like that of the Vietnam War lasting for about a year. The Americans were given only a few weeks training to fight tough, experienced, hardcore guerilla fighters. The educational package provided by the JWTC included the use of weapons and tactical skills, through rigid trainings and exercises. It ran for ten three-week cycles annually, with reinforcement training exercises also occurring in addition to the ten regular cycles being promoted. The training cycle is usually composed of three steps: the training for individual soldier skills, small unit and company. Other trainings to help military troops prepare for the jungle wars and the survival in such environment included several patrols to the jungle terrains of Panama. This allowed them to experience the overall condition of being thrown into a jungle in preparation for Vietnam War. Individuals were exposed to different animals and vegetation, edible, non-edible, poisonous and non-poisonous. During this time, instructors repeatedly emphasized and stressed the various diseases and viruses which they may come in contact with in this type of environment. Shots like Gamma Globulin, a vaccine t o prevent contact of yellow fever which was quite common in central and South America, were given to the trainees (Protsch, 2004). Lindsay-Poland (2003) described the training for jungle warfare as one that served to test soldiers masculinity against savage nature and toughen them for the task of fighting civilizations Asian and Latin American enemies (p.196). Instructors taught the would-be fighters counterrevolutionary warfare with high specialized and complex tactics. Techniques designed to trap and smash enemy forces, as well as how to stage and repel ambush attacks, were just some of those items integrated into the curriculum. Afternoons were spent in the centers prized possessionthe zoo, where trainees hold and wrestle wild animals including the much-dreaded boa constrictors, just to practice dealing with the inhabitants of the jungle. Together with the curriculum being set out by the JWTC, the Jungle Operations Committee (JOC) also took certain initiatives to improve their mode and quality of instruction. Aside from conducting courses, the committee gathered questionnaires to officers and other military personnel who were assigned in Vietnam and asked for the reappraisal of the curriculum based on their experiences (Hudnall, 2004). This approach allowed them to acquire a more accurate detail on what is to be expected and therefore what is needed by the troops to prepare and survive in the jungle. It permitted the school to view its weaknesses and strengths especially in the improvement of their subjects making students more realistic to see the actual scenario in which they were about to face. A more concrete example of the improvements done through this practice can be traced back to October 1965, where instructors were able to observe a jungle-operations course in Hawaii, which was actually quite similar as to that in Panama but this time with an extra twist. The addition of the scene for a cordon and the search mock Vietnamese village was one point which the JWTC did not cover during their training. This theoretical enactment of possible scenes in Vietnam created a slight disadvantage to their trainees as compared to that of the other training. Such approach may help the trainees physically and mentally prepare more for the situation and believing in this as quite important to the students in training, the cadre or instructor added it into their curriculum. The condition in Vietnam was also a contributing reason why US military received minimal success. The environment was very harsh to the United States military; diseases like Dysentery, Malaria and Jungle Rot were very common and affected a lot of the soldiers. Jungles provide very little visibility with a few yards at most. Monsoon condition was also a factor as it rained straight for three to four months, making the troops wet, no matter how hard they try to keep themselves dry. Animal attacks, tigers and snakes were also situations which although were expected from the onset of their trainings were significantly different as compared to that in their training in Panama (Swartzlander, 2005). No experience in training would compensate for the actual scenario, especially when training and combat grounds differ in climatic conditions and natural resources and bounties. Aside from the lack of experience of the United States Army to jungle warfare, another item which may have caused the struggles and limited success during the Vietnam War was the training and actual stocks for the artillery. The United States and other Western countries depended on superior technology to defeat their opponents. However, in jungle warfare, the jungles erode to this blanket of superiority, making them more vulnerable (Kemp, Withington Keggler, 2008). Thick jungles can limit the use of vehicles and helicopters, which made surprise attacks, especially by those well-versed in the jungle terrain, easier. The close range battles and the barrier of trees and plants also made it more difficult to use support weapons and precision-guided ammunitions. Most of the weapons, uniforms and military ammunition used for training and actual combat during the Vietnam War were quite ill-suited for the type of fights and the tropical environment. Military issued uniforms were heavy and hot, and quite easily destroyed in the jungle environment. They were cheap, and they rot easily especially due to changes in weather condition. The high technology equipment and artillery used by the US army during the height of the Vietnam War also caused several problems for the troops on the ground. Take for example the M-14 rifle which was actually the type of armament used by the first batch of soldiers sent to Vietnam. With a weight of a little over eight pounds, it added to the sixty-five-pound weight survival kit brought by the soldier while away from camp. Furthermore, even if troops were trained in handling this equipment in jungle training centers, with shots either set to single or semi-automatic, they were not prepared for the different problems the weapons would actually pose during the actual encounter. Both the M-14 and its replacement the M-16, which although is much lighter at six pounds as compared to the former, jammed easily under wet and dry field conditions (Westheider, 2007). Grenades, which were also included in the individuals set of weapons, were still considered quite risky in the jungle environment. Fuse pins can be caught and removed by trees, shrubs, and some undergrowth resulting to possible unwarranted and unintentional deadly explosions. Another important point of jungle warfare, which added to the loss of the US to the Vietnam War, is their new strategy, which they used during the latter part of the war. Instead of following the search and destroy mission tactics to defeat the Viet Cong the more accurate name of their opponents they shifted their focus to also eliminating those that are supplying provisions to their enemy. However, with this new focus, new complications arose. Compared to US soldiers, the Viet Cong did not wear uniforms, and it was impossible to detect and identify them amongst the general public, especially together with the innocents. While US troops may have the best weapons and artillery or jungle warfare training, they were still unsuccessful because they had a difficult time identifying their opponents (Levy, 2004). This problem proved to be one of the strongest points of the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. The US, in its desperation to end the dominance of the Viet Cong, resulted to two major search and destroy missions, the Operation Cedar Falls and the Operation Junction City, whose primary aim was to destroy the major strongholds and headquarters of the opponent. Nevertheless, in both occasions, the enemy left the targets before the American soldiers could attack and destroy the area. However, once the US military left these areas, the Viet Cong would make their way back and re-occupy the place. This was a continuous pattern all throughout the Vietnam War, resulting to difficulties for the US Army to concretely win the battles in Vietnam. The US government may have concluded these two missions as a success since they were able to take up the area but overall, it was still a negligible triumph because the degree of loss to the Vietnamese side was very small. The failure of the two major missions can also be credited to the different techniques and strategies that the Viet Cong used: they built underground tunnels to escape confrontation, questioning, and capture and with their knowledge of the jungle area; they also prepared plans, whether it was hiding behind trees and or shooting enemies from on-top. Conclusion The US army encountered many challenges during the Vietnam War. First was the lack of training and experience in jungle warfare. The three week period was simply not enough to instill the techniques and skills necessary for having a full-pledged jungle fighter. Second were the significant differences in climate and environmental conditions. Although initial training before the actual deployment to Vietnam was in a jungle terrain, the differences in seasons as well as climate, between Vietnam and Panama still held a big effect to the primary condition of the troops. Third, the weapons and equipment handed out to troops were unsuitable for jungle warfare conditions. Lastly, the tactics used by the troops were inappropriate for jungle wars. The fact that the enemies of the US during the Vietnam War were well-versed in jungle operations or warfare and that they had the support of local community was already a large challenge posed, as these are coupled together with the other four items presented above. It can be argued that the training, considering the limited time and resources, at the jungle warfare training school, was the best it had to offer. In terms of teaching basic information and letting soldiers initially feel the conditions of conducting wars, inside the terrain, the JWTC is assumed to have sufficiently and credibly spread the available information. Nevertheless, this still proved insufficient in the type of war that the US troops battled in Vietnam.

Autocratic Democratic And Laissez Faire Management Essay
Autocratic Democratic And Laissez Faire Management Essay In the past twelve months I have witnessed quite a few leadership styles. When i was working in one of the diamond manufacturing companys the leader of the firm was the owner himself. He was a democratic leader he used to lead us by setting examples himself. All the decisions concerning the firm was always taken after consulting the employees of the company. Opinions of all the employees were duly considered before setting goals and targets which were to be achieved. But once the target were set he made clear that it has to be achieved under all circumstances because no targets were set without consulting the employees and above all targets which were set were realistic targets. This type of leadership behaviour is termed as job-centred behaviour by (Buchanan Huczynski 2010, p.598) the company in which I was working was a small size firm with only twenty employees working in it. He had no assistants and use to manage all the employees all by himself. Being a leader he had to deal wi th individual, group and organizational goals which he did it very efficiently and effectively. As mentioned in Buchanan Huczynski(2010)Managers do the things right but leaders do the right things he always did the right things at the right time as a true leader. According (Feilder 1996, cited in Hellriegel, et al. 2010, p.333) Group atmosphere is defined as the level at which a leaders control is accepted. Here in this case the group atmosphere was not at its peak. And the task structure was more of a routine one where goals were clearly defined by the leader to all the employees. According to Burns (1978), cited in Dawson(1996, p.227) he distinguishes leaders in two categories one as transformational leader and other as an transactional leader. the leader of our group was a transactional leader the one who gives what the employee desires and in return ask employees to full fill leaders desires. Here the employees wants were to earn money this was satisfied by giving their hard work and time to the company, an in return employees desires were fulfilled by getting the job done by paying the money to the employee. All employees were satisfied under his leadership style and behaviour including me which led to an comfortable organizational atmosphere to work in to and in this way enhanced organizational performance. The other example which I have noticed is an example of my father when I used to work in our family business. Here the relationship between me and my father was that of a leader, follower relationship. Here the leadership style which I observed was an autocratic one. As I was still a learner into the business I dint have much of knowledge and experience to take decisions. Here the group atmosphere was at its peak and the task structure was a non-routine one because here in this case the leader knows the better than the employee to perform a particular task (Feilder 1996, cited in Hellriegel, et al. 2010, p.333). The organisational goal were common that to increase the sales and thereby increasing the profits of the company. The leadership behaviour observed here was of employee-centred leadership behaviour. This means that the leader focuses on the relationship between the leader and the employee and he also focuses on the need of the employee (Buchanan and Huczynski 2010, p.606) as per James McGregor Burns(1978) the leader here was a transformational leader which means that the followers treated here with relationship in terms of motivation and commitment, and inspiring the followers to give more than the expected to improve organizational performance. The leadership style changes with the same person when it comes to different organization. For example when I am with my father during the office hours he is an autocratic leader, but as soon as we come back from work the leadership style changes. This is supported by Vroom and yettons (1973), cited in Rosenfeld and Wilson (1999, p.201) describes normative theory of leadership effectiveness, which says that the leadership style changes according to different situations. My father is the leader of our family also, here a different style of leadership is observed. Laissez-faire type of leadership is adopted here where all the members of the organization has the freedom to do whatever he wants to do. Here the decisions are not forced upon anybody and everyone has the full freedom to do whatever one wishes to do. Here the common organizational goal is to run the house effectively which the leader has to take care of. Which is fulfilled under this style of leadership. The leadership which I have noticed in the past twelve can also be termed as participative leadership in the first case and supportive leadership in the second and third case (Luthans 2002, p.587).Thus in the end we can say that leadership style and behaviour changes with different organization. From the above given examples also we can state that an effective leader always leads to an effective organizational. And thus in the end according to my own personal experinces I can say that there is a strong relationship between leadership style and behaviour to organizational performance. Comparing Ralph and Jack to Show How the Characters Change in Lord of t
Comparing Ralph and Jack to Show How the Characters Change in Lord of the Flies Golding uses many techniques to change his characters as they progress throughout the novel. The main character Ralph is a prime example of this developing character. Both of the boys arrive on the island with a certain manner. They are sensible and being from well brought up families and homes, soon start to work together in harmony on the island. The first time we encounter Ralph is at the beginning of the novel where he is described as "The boy with fair hairà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦[He had] taken off his school sweater...[His] grey shirt tuck to his back and his hair was plastered to his forehead." The fact he has fair hair and also the quote "built like a boxer" suggest he could be a heroic figure. This emphasised by Golding when he clearly shows Ralph to be from a public school as he "has taken off his school sweater." We can see that Ralph is still clearly a child at this point in the novel, he "stands on his head" and uses juvenile language such as "Whacko" and "Wizard" When the voice of piggy shouts out, he stops and waits. This shows us an insight that he is willing to wait for this unknown person, but he "jerks up his stockings" Golding uses this to show us that he is impatient too. Later on in the chapter we see Ralph being "offhand" and "obviously uninterested" towardsPiggy. We feel sympathetic to Piggy as he is seen as an outcast from the very beginning. We can see that Piggy is knowledgeable as he spots the conch, and knows what it is. Although Piggy found it, Ralph is the person who swims down to the bottom of the lagoon and collects it from the reeds, showing us that he is clearly strong and fit, as he can swim. T... ...e and ape-like" and finally his painted face, hiding all innocents and his sinister side. Near the end of the novel, he feels no shame about the deaths of Simon and Piggy, nor his attempts to kill Ralph. In the novel Jack and his tribe represent anarchy and the downward spiral of civilisation. This is most seen when the conch, which throughout the novel is the symbol of humanity and civilisation, is smashed. Both Ralph and Jack have changed throughout the novel. Golding presents both of them as young innocent children at the beginning. They are almost unrecognisable by the end. They have changed both physical and mentally. There is an intervention at the end: the Naval officer, jokes about them "having a war or something?" and this of course is exactly what is happening. The moral of the novel is with out intervention, which will win, good or evil?

lamb Essay -- essays research papers
The lamb is a symbol of innocence, ignorance, purity, and self justification. In William Blakeââ¬â¢s poem The Lamb, children are biblically innocent and the speaker contrast himself to the higher divinity. In this interpretation of children the speaker may possibly be trying to use ignorance as an excuse for sin in his life. The lambââ¬â¢s natural gifts are clearly envied by the speaker, the gifts being food, shelter, and happiness. William Blake may have used this scene of fertile valleys to allow the reader to also feel the envy towards the lambââ¬â¢s peaceful existence. ââ¬Å"The lamb by no fault of its own is prosecuted by speaker, later to be found incoherent with his own tortures and suffragesâ⬠(Paananem 40). à à à à à William Blake used direct dictation through his poem, ââ¬Å"The Lambâ⬠, in distributing his theorem, which we, humans, seek to find peace within our selves only after reestablishing our identity with something pure. Humans are biblically damned to eternal unhappiness, the past was the beginning of futureââ¬â¢s pain. The biblical reference to Adam and Eve is subtle but clear enough with the envy portrayed by the speaker towards the lamb. The eternal suffering will not cease until humans take acknowledgment of their own faults and own sins. The speaker is seeking answers to his questions, about how the lamb gained such natural innocence here. There are no clear answers to any of the speakerââ¬â¢s questions throughout the poem, causing the readers to stir within themse...

Persuasive Speech Essay
It has been proven that wellness programs in the workplace can increase productivity and elevate work environment moods while decreasing health related work issues and decreasing overall companywide health care costs. By taking some simple steps toward implementing a wellness program in the workplace we will be able to save money on health care, cut down on health issues that increase absenteeism, and increase productivity through more energy and upbeat attitudes. Why do we as a company want to implement a wellness program? There are many beneficial reasons for doing so. We will decrease unnecessary costs due to unhealthy lifestyles. For example; Healthier employeeââ¬â¢s leads to lower premiums and healthier employees also lead to less missed days and injuries. Also, healthy employees are more success oriented. This can be seen by increased productivity and the fact that healthy minds bring healthy attitudes and stronger morale. So now you are saying to yourself that this sounds g reat, but it must be complicated to initiate a program of this nature. Well letââ¬â¢s look at the steps needed to implement a wellness program in our office. To begin, we would want to survey our employees to find the goals we want to achieve, and then determine what we need to accomplish these goals. After setting our goals it may be in our best interests to consult with a firm that specializes in designing and implementing workplace wellness programs. By setting the goals and consulting with specialists we can now start to create a budget through the use of data that is based on our investment to return ratio. It is important to determine our companyââ¬â¢s monetary investment so that the program itself will not suffer from interruptions or lack of funding. It may also help to create a rewards system to enhance companywide involvement. So now we have a wellness program designed that is based off of our group goals, a budget in place, and the program is ready to be implemented. It will now become important to keep the program running smoothly. By the use of meetings we can discuss our movement towards our goals and highlight positive personal stories. We could also provide health and wellness screening that can give both the employees and our company important feedback. Also we could look into group packages for gyms and health clubs. Lastly, by using reward based games we can continue to provide motivation and this will assist in keeping maximum involvement in the company wellness program. In closing, I know that if we as a company initiate a workplace

My Sister
I was three years old sitting in my front yard when one of my older sisters friends frantically comes out of nowhere and starts screaming incredibly loud towards me. I was only three, and had no idea what she was talking about. All I remember is her being completely bitter. So I was hopelessly sitting there taking it all in. Which is where my older sister Brooke burst in front of me with extreme anger and starts screaming right back at her and tells her to get lost. I felt so protected and safe by my sister that day, I miss having her around. It all started with this overwhelming feeling of being extremely claustrophobic. We arrived at the crowded airport at exactly five o'clock. Everyone crammed moving shoulder to shoulder. The plane was canceled so we had to stay shoulder to shoulder for two more long torturing hours. Finally, it was time for my big sister Brooke to get on her flight and leave for the extreme BMW ( basic military training). After this I would not be seeing my sister for several months. My sister and I are very close; It was very hard letting her go.As the plane flew miles away tears ran down my face like razor blades, my heart was cracking like someone had Just hit it with a hammer and chisel , and I had that horrible throbbing main in my throat where It hurts to swallow. After several torturous months of crying and praying for my sister, it was finally time to go see her graduate. Standing there In the excruciating sun on the curb waiting for all the airman to Jog by chanting with their running cadences with their powerful booming voices. Finally Brook's flight jogged by and seeing her for the first time after those long months gave me so much happiness and Joy. The ceremony was pretty amazing. All that, Mitt's (military training Instructors) gave long heart filled touching speeches which made my family and I cry. After all hose tears and amazing speeches each airman got granted a united States Alarm Force coin. After the 2 hour ceremony we fi nally got to go see our graduated Airman. My family and I were overwhelmed with Joy and couldn't stop crying. After leaving the Alarm Force base we all went out to eat at a pizza parlor. After filling our stomachs with pizza and soda pop, Brooke told us all about BMW how It was hard and demanding but after a while she started to get used to It. Also how It was really good at times, because of all the new friends and people she had met. Brooke loved BMW and said It was a very good experience. After all the tears Brooke had cried, all the horrible pain she had suffered through, all the hard training she had to endure, all turned out to be worth It.From the time she protected and stood up for me when I was three until now Brooke has never let me down. Brooke Is, and always will be my sister, my airman, and my hero. My Sister By Nicknaming My sister and I are very close; it was very hard letting her go. Carmina Burana
A work that many have, at least heard a piece, of is Carmina Burana. Carl Orff composed this piece of music in 1936. A German, he was one of few composers that continued work during the Anti-Semitic rule of the country. Orff based his work off of a collection of poems found at the monastery of Benedikbeuren that dates back to the Twelfth Century! Carmina Burana is a set of twenty-five pieces that concern many of things going in everyoneââ¬â¢s life today.Drinking, gambling, love, sex, fate, and fortune are just a few of the topics Orff composed of. 1 In this concert report I will go through the pieces that stood out the most to me. As mentioned, the most famous piece of this work is the opening sequence, ââ¬Å"O Fortunaâ⬠. This glamorous piece begins with the full orchestra and chorus playing a loud, brave tone that quickly drops off into, what I hear as a loud whisper, sung by the entire chorus. Orff doesnââ¬â¢t let the listener take a break by coming back with same loud tone that the piece began with.Percussion instruments can be vividly heard throughout this opening piece, seemingly above the rest of the instruments. Early in this work, Orff establishes his theme of a ââ¬Å"Wheel of Fortuneâ⬠. 2 With the boldness of the opening sounds I feel that Orff is setting the tone for the whole work. Although the work is sung entirely in Latin, the translation of the first movement may surprise most people. The opening words ââ¬Å"O Fortuneâ⬠gives the listener an idea what the piece is about. As the piece goes, Orff describes fortune as oppressing and poor, in what I believe he was feeling at the time. The last words of this movement, in translation ââ¬Å" everyone weep with me ââ¬Å" were the biggest surprise to me because the orchestra ends the piece in carnival like melody. The second movement of Orffââ¬â¢s work is titled ââ¬Å"Fortune plango vulneraââ¬Å". This is personally my favorite piece of the work because of the hit or miss har mony. Different instruments take turns using the high-low rhythms, along with the chorus. The male voice is prominent at the beginning but soon after you can hear the voice of the full orchestra. Before reading the text n translation, this piece gave the idea of a rabbit jumping through to pasture or meadow to a novice listener like myself. This piece picks up from the last movement still pertaining to fortune. In the latter part of this piece Orff actually wrote in his overall theme by mentioning ââ¬Å"the wheel of Fortune turnsâ⬠. The fourth movement, ââ¬Å"Omnia sol temperatâ⬠is sung in a completely different way. It begins with a male soloist singing, accompanied softly by violins. The way Orff chose to display this movement shows that there is no defined rhythm he is following. The soloist singing in a profound masculine voice sets the tone for this movement. The next movement discussed stands out as being one of the longest works of the cantata. ââ¬Å"In taberna q uando sumusâ⬠opens with stringed instruments followed by percussion, and then a variety of other instruments join with the chorus. ââ¬Å"When we are in the tavernâ⬠, the title sets this piece up for what I think would have a been a popular movement when it originated. Orff tells of drinking and gambling at the tavern, then goes on to list thirty names such as ââ¬Å"the rich manâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the poor manâ⬠that all drink. This stood out to me because I didnââ¬â¢t see this coming at all! It is also my least my favorite piece of the work. With the setting what it is, I didnââ¬â¢t particularly like the minor tone heard on and off in this movement. Orff could have been trying to relay a message by this of the tavern as a sometimes dark, bad place. The last movement of the cantata, ââ¬Å"O Fortunaâ⬠begins just as the piece began with the same instruments and harmony. The last movement mirrors the first in a way that makes the listener understand the true tone of this work.I compliment Orff for doing this because I feel it is necessary. With a piece as strong and bold as this, I would think most composers would have chose to do this. After going back and re-listening to the first and last piece, there is no difference to my ear. The last movement does not lack any of the strength of the first movement; itââ¬â¢s a repeat that is well deserved. This theme has been used in many American movies, but sadly it is seldom recognized. Carl Orff made his mark in music history with Carmina Burana, namely the first and last movements ââ¬Å"O Fortunaâ⬠.There are many more movements in this piece that all have uniqueness and glamour. Even though I am not the most avid Carl Orff fan, this piece surprised me with every movement. The overall performance of this piece was outstanding, with all the different melodies and tones, the use of full orchestra to solo vocalist, and an excellent job of conducting by Jeffery Thomas, I can see how this piece gained as much fame as it did. 1 ââ¬Å" The Enjoyment of Musicâ⬠Eleventh Edition, Kristine Forney and Joseph Machlis 2 http://classicalmusic. about. com/od/20thcenturymusic/a/carmina_burana. htm

Employees Appraisal System is a method used by Human Resource Administrators for them to scale their employees regarding to their working relationship with other employees and work efficiency. This was done randomly and is accomplished by surveyed employee with all honesty and secrecy. In effect the HR Administrators will decide weather such employee be given a promotion, an increase of salary or none of those will be given on the basis of merits shown by Appraisal for such employee.Well as far as we can see, such appraisal system works effectively as far as Administrative aspect is concerned but in the Developmental aspect, appraisal systems may interpret datum which are created of personal biases because of its nature which is personally answered by an employee and as from that instance the person who is the subject of the said appraisal will have no chance to defend himself from any negative feedback and impression. So in this manner we can see the weakness of an appraisal system a s the results will come out in a written form as judgment and decision were already implemented over such employee. In eliminating an appraisal system will help the management to create or to formulate a new system which they could assess their employees in much interactive and creative manner, they could also exert more effort to know personally the people who works with them and n their own very eyes manager could personally assess their employees in a much personal sense with out the opinion of others that may somehow put such person into bad light.Only that, this could be a more time consuming work which could be lessen in a greater sense with the help of such appraisal system, it also may rate down the working efficiency of a company if appraisal system will not be use as there will be a numerous meetings which may interrupt the companyââ¬â¢s official function.Lastly, it may deliver such deliberate arguments between such employees each in every meeting simply because of manà ¢â¬â¢s natural differences in ideas which in the long run may result into a series of resignations because of such issues which may affect the companyââ¬â¢s working environment. Happy Ending by Margaret Atwood Essay
In this essay, I examine the short story, ââ¬Å"Happy Endings,â⬠by Margaret Atwood and how the Canadian author tackled the topic of love and the different ways it is portrayed in relationships and marriage, as well as examined writing styles as used in the story. For my conclusion, I will elaborate on the importance of love and romance in making marriages last as well as emphasize on the cruciality of coming up with an original and authentic literary work. In this story, Atwood focused on both the mechanics of writing and the effects of gender stereotyping, as well as challenged writers who rely on the stereotypical characterization of men and women and to the reader who accepts such gender typing. At the same time, she challenged other writers to more closely examine typical literary convention. Happy Endings has six story versions that present a different scenario of what Through analysis of ââ¬Å"Happy Endingsâ⬠by Margaret Atwood happens to the main characters, John, Mary, Madge and Fred. Three main themes surface from this story. These themes are that the story depicts middle-class values; portrays marriage and romance; and illustrates writing conventions. Touching on middle-class values, Atwood represents these values in her story as an element of the society. In doing so, the characters in the story manifest them even in the more troublesome aspects of the stories. In tackling marriage and romance, the story revolves around the fulfillment that marriage brings. Using material success and ease of life as the criteria to define a successful marriage, John and Mary certainly have built one. Romance, on the other hand, also emerges as an important theme. The various versions of the story mimic the trajectory of cliched romance novels, which end with the hero and the heroine living happily ever after. Atwood also parodies some typical plots of romantic novels, which include murder, suicide, infidelity, and disease. Lastly, Atwood also dealt with writing conventions in the story by way of experimentation. Atwoodââ¬â¢s text in the story is self-referential as she explicitly refers to events that have happened earlier on, as well as the mechanics and elements of writing. Both directly and indirectly, Atwood addresses the whole notion of how an author develops a story. In addition, Atwoodââ¬â¢s work also challenges writers to compose authentic works. From the above information and opinions, I conclude that for a more different and effective way of writing, authenticity is important for writers to value. I also conclude that love in marriage or any kind of relationship needs romance to be its companion in order for these relationships to last as romance is the oil that keeps friction from wearing out the relationship. Children living with diabetes (type 1 diabetes) require non-stop daily management, implying that they must become experts of their own condition and should be highly informed than the average doctor in order to manage the daily demands of the disease. According to scientific research, type 1 diabetes is partly hereditary. A vast number of differing genes are involved in the inheritance of the disease. However, children do not inherit the actual disease. They inherit genes that make them susceptible to contracting the disease. Type 1 diabetes that infects children is categorized as an autoimmune disorder. This means that the disease acts as an allergy in the bodies of infected children. It, therefore, makes their immune system to cause an attack on part of their bodies. However, the exact cause of diabetes in children is still unknown. The symptoms of diabetes in children start when pancreatic cells start deteriorating over a long period of time. Pancreatic cells play the role of insulin produce. Art and Fashion - Surrealism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Art and Fashion - Surrealism - Essay Example The essay "Art and Fashion - Surrealism" concerns the surrealism in art and fashion. Schiaparelli together with Salvador Dali engaged in a symbiotic and collaborative partnership, in late 1930s. Schiaparelliââ¬â¢s Innovative surrealist dresses and accessories influenced by Daliââ¬â¢s paintings and sculptures. Schiaparelli experimented with the notion of clothing that dominates the human form, which compelled viewers to confront the primacy of fashion-as-art and the subordination of the female body. Indeed, Schiaparelli did not only transform the fashion industry but also smashed its foundations. Schiaparelliââ¬â¢s attraction to modernism in late 1920s and 1930s mirror in her predominant utilization of accessories, which played a critical function in her collection right from the beginning and she preferred to create a whole ensemble including jewelry, gloves, hats, and shoes. The innovations by Schiaparelli were a considerable liberation for women and attended by the introdu ction of vibrant and strong colors (exuberance and decoration), as well as themes in a collection. Schiaparelli effectively translated dominant Surrealism principles such as, an object never realizing the same function as its name or its image, into imaginative and provocative designs. In so doing, Schiaparelli generated ââ¬Å"hard chicâ⬠fashions for unconventional-looking women. Surrealists were self-respecting artists in their own way and their works were at the center of challenging the patriarchal tradition of Surrealism. The female body was a vital tool for women Surrealists to generate a broad and varied expression of their sexuality, which cannot be limited to a single artistic medium. The Surrealists alluded to the notion of female sexuality laden with playfulness and humor.4 The contribution of Elsa Schiaparelli to the Surrealism movement is pertinent and rich as she was able to challenge conventional representations of femininity via playfulness.5 Elsa Schiaparelli was able to overcome the notion of women as objects of male consumption, and transformed the female body into a self-governing entity enriched by elegant sexual display. Elsa Schiaparelliââ¬â¢s designs based on key aspects such as sexuality, gender and fetish demonstrate that she generated garments, which were feminine and functional while at the same time preserving the Surrealist theme of the female anatomy as fetish.6 Discussion Schiaparelli combined the notion of classic design from the Romans and Greeks with the overriding need for freedom of movement. It was in the 1930s, which fashions designs started to be flamboyant as shoulders started to be a critical focus during the decade. During the 1930s, shoulders started to be a critical focus as heavily padded jackets for both men and women started to gain prominence. Schiaparelli can be regarded as a trendsetter in the 1930s and enjoyed a natural sensitivity towards fashion styling. Schiaparelli's legacy remains for her audaci ous improvisations that perfectly fitted with the surrealistic art dominating the period.7 Elsa Schiaparelli is well-known for her iconoclastic bravado and unlimited originality of her work. Schiaparelli contravened topical conventions within the

Business Management Affairs - Coursework Example 95). This element was developed from decisions made by judges in various cases. A duty of care involves taking reasonable care to prevent acts or omissions which are more likely to injure the involved parties. It requires a person to be prudent, cautious, attentive and careful when acting toward others. In other words, one should meet the standard of care in their actions to wards others. a. Foresee ability: This is whether the consequences are reasonably foreseeable. For example in the case of Kent v Griffiths (2000) the damages was held to reasonably foreseeable. In Topp v London Country Bus Ltd (1993), there was no foresee ability. b. Proximity: This involves the closeness between parties which can be either physically or legal relationships. In the case of Home Office v Dorset Yatch Club (1970), it was held that there was proximity. There was no proximity in the case of Caporo v Dickman (1990). c. Fair, just and reasonable: This determines whether it is fair, reasonable or just to apply duty of care. In the case of Hill v C.C of W. Yorkshire (1988), it was held not to be fair, reasonable and just. However a duty of care was applied on the fire brigade in the case of Capital v Hampshire County Council (1997). Breach of duty is when the defendant fails to meet the expected standard as determined by the law. If the claimant proved that the defendant owed him a duty of care he should further show that the there was a breach of duty by the defendant. Breach of duty is determined by the degree of risk involved and the seriousness of the harm which can be measured objectively. Where the harm has several possible causes, the claimant should prove beyond reasonable doubt that the negligence of the defendant was the main cause. This test is well demonstrated by the case of Wilsher v Essex AHA (1988). With a weakness of particular harm, the defendant will be held responsible as illustrated in the case of Smith v Leech

Professional Ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Professional Ethics - Essay Example However, as important as ethics are for any and all professions, the need and importance for ethics within the IT profession is arguably even more profound. As such, the following analysis will seek to engage the reader with an understanding of the way in which ethics is of such a vast importance within the IT profession and is so central to practice of good business behavior. Furthermore, the analysis will also draw upon some of the questions of value and how they are different from questions of fact. Lastly, examples of the IT profession in addressing issues of ethics will be utilized as a means of drawing further prints upon the situation and moral needs that might be illustrated. According to the ACM, the code of ethics for IT professionals includes nearly 24 points; among these contributing to human well-being, avoiding harm to others, honoring property rights and copyrights, respecting privacy, honoring confidentiality, and seeking to improve public understanding of computing and its consequences. Whereas this is by no means an exhaustive list of all of the determinants that the ACM seeks to put forward, it does provide a running commentary on some of the aspects that the ACM code of conduct understands as central to the application of ethical and morally responsible IT work. Arguably, one of the most distinctive facets of ethics, or even of ethical considerations, within the IT profession is concentric upon the overall amount of data and responsibilities that the IT professional has at his or her disposal (ACM, 2014). As a direct function of the way in which IT work is performed, it individual working within this particular career path will necessarily ha ve access to a broad variety of different personal, sensitive, and public information. Likewise, although it is somewhat dangerous to state that the ethical considerations for one particular career path are higher than another, it is fair to state that the overall level of responsibility that an IT

Participation Discussion Questions - Essay Example ââ¬ËThese laws protect the employees in matters such as compensation, working conditions, and retirement benefits. I agree with you that it is imperative for managers to have excellent knowledge of employment laws. Managers lower their business risk by complying with employment laws because a lack of compliance can lead to governmental fines, civil lawsuits, and a loss of brand value. If a corporation fails to comply with basic employment laws such as paying at or above minimum wage they can incur in damages beyond the potential fines. The customer can lose confidence in the corporate behavior of the company and switch to the competition. In the 21st century corporate social responsibility has become an important strategy to achieve business growth. The utilization of hiring practices that foster diversity has positive benefits such as improving creativity and gaining insight into other cultures. If an employee violates employment laws a manager must discipline the person and possible terminate employment if the violates warrants such punishment. Knowledge is power, thus education the workforce on employment will improve the quality and value of the human capital of a corporation. As you mentioned understanding employment laws is a two way process since both employer and employees are affected by them. Applying educational efforts in the corporate world to increase the knowledge of employees of employment laws is a sound investment. The overall business risk of an enterprise decreases as the employees become more knowledgeable of employment laws. Diminishing interpersonal conflict due to a lack of knowledge of employment increases the productivity of the workers. I liked your idea of creating handbooks with information regarding employment laws. Doing so is an initiative that provides documentation the workers can use to study on their own time about employment laws as well as reference

Stats - Essay Example The median age of the buyer is 46 years and the middle half of the buyerââ¬â¢s age is in-between 40 years and 52.25 years (interquartile range = 12.25 years). The minimum and maximum age of the buyers are 21 years and 73 years, respectively. There are 4 mild outliers (21, 72, 72, and 73 years) in the data, as one buyer age is under 21.6 years (below the lower inner fence) and three buyers age is above 70.6 years (above the upper inner fence). There are no extreme outliers in the data. b. As shown in the scatter diagram depicting the relationship between vehicle profits and age of the buyer, there appears a positive linear relationship between vehicle profits and age of the buyer. The profits on vehicles for younger buyers are less as compared to the profits on vehicles for older buyers. Thus, Applewood Auto Groupââ¬â¢s marketing departments belief that younger buyers purchase vehicles on which lower profits are earned and the older buyers purchase vehicles on which higher profits are earned is correct. d. Based on the above analysis, the Applewood Auto Group should go ahead with the advertising campaign as planned. The correlation coefficient value of 0.262 suggests that there is a weak positive linear relationship between vehicle profits and age of the buyer. The coefficient of determination value of 0.068 indicates that buyerââ¬â¢s age explains about 6.8% variation in vehicle profit. Thus, the buyerââ¬â¢s age has a small effect on vehicle profit. However, since, the sample size is very large (n = 180), this relationship is statistically significant. Therefore, the Applewood Auto Groupââ¬â¢s marketing department should use this information as part of an upcoming advertising campaign to try to attract older buyers on which the profits tend to be higher. As shown in figure 1, there appears an increasing trend in house prices in the UK, London and North East from 1986 until 2013.
